A few other on-target schools came close but didn't make the final seven. SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry's Conservation Biology / Forest Health track is an excellent forest-and-plant fit, but it's redundant with the cleaner Cal Poly Humboldt and Colorado State picks already on this list, and its cost buys no field-station advantage over them. Cal Poly Humboldt's own Fisheries Biology major (Freshwater concentration) is genuinely on-niche and dissection-light, but was dropped to avoid listing two programs from the same campus — it's already reachable as a same-campus alternative to the Humboldt Botany pick above, so it added no diversity to the list. And at University of Wisconsin–Madison, the "Marine Sciences" name on the freshwater certificate is worth a note of caution on its own: despite the name, the usable, on-constraint content is the freshwater/limnology side, so don't be misled into expecting marine coursework there.
